E15 Conversation on the Global Trade and Investment Architecture
On 26 October, alongside the World Economic Forum Summit on the Global Agenda 2015 in Abu Dhabi, UAE, E15Initiative Principal Conveners Ricardo Meléndez-Ortiz, Chief Executive of ICTSD, and Richard Samans, Managing Director and Member of the Managing Board at the World Economic Forum, as well as E15 Steering Board Member Amb. Jonathan Fried, Ambassador and Permanent of Canada to the WTO, engaged a group of experts in a dinner conversation on the future of the global trade and investment architecture (GTIA).
The dinner was used as an opportunity to have an exchange of views about the challenges facing the global architecture for trade and investment in the context of sustainable development, focusing on where the key weaknesses, gaps, and priorities for improvement lie. Discussion questions included:
- What are the greatest structural challenges facing the trade and investment architecture in enabling transformative, inclusive, low carbon growth?
- What does the architecture not cover, or address poorly, in terms of its ability to respond to these challenges and in light of shifting business, trade, and investment realities?
- Where would you recommend targeted changes, improvements or innovation – short-term or medium term – and which would yield the greatest benefits from a sustainable development view point?
Attendance at this event was by invitation only.
