Jacobo Cohen Imach
Jacobo Cohen Imach is Vice President General Counsel in charge of Legal and Public Affairs at MercadoLibre.com. He joined MercadoLibre in 1999 as its first lawyer and since then he been responsible for managing MercadoLibre’s global legal team and advising the company’s board and management on legal issues and corporate governance matters and public policy affairs.
Jacobo leads a team of 50 people with more than 35 lawyers in 5 different countries that offer legal advice to the company’s various business and staff units. Among other important milestones, he coordinated from the legal perspective the initial public offering (IPO) of the company and issuance of debt for more than $300 million and an SEC-Registered Secondary Offering for an amount of $1.6 billion; he also directed and coordinated several mergers and acquisitions. Jacobo developed and implemented an intellectual property protection programme for MercadoLibre to protect third-party IP rights, which uses a notice and takedown procedure to remove items allegedly infringing IP rights in the marketplace. It gained public recognition and has received several awards over the years and became an industry standard in Latin America.
Jacobo holds key positions in several industry associations. He is president of the Latin-American Internet Association (ALAI), board member of the Argentine Chamber of Commerce (CAC), vice president of the Latin-American and Caribbean Internet and e-Commerce Federation, director of the Internet Chamber of Argentina, and chairman of the commission of Public Affairs of the Argentine E-Commerce Chamber. He has participated as speaker in several conferences throughout the region, speaking on e-commerce, intellectual property, privacy and data protection, and cybercrime, among other topics.
